Google has become exceptionally good at helping people find useful information on the web. This easy access to information also leads people to fictitious articles. Thousands of articles are published every day, and it becomes very hard for the user to decide between fact and fiction. Last October Jigsaw a separate sector of Alphabets, Google’s parent company, announced that they would start enabling publishers in some countries to show a “Fact Check” tag on Google News for news stories. This label will help in identifying articles are fact checked by news publishers and fact-checking organizations.
Justin Kosslyn product manager at Jigsaw writes in his blog that “After assessing feedback from both users and publishers, we’re making the Fact Check label in Google News available everywhere, and expanding it into Search globally in all languages. For the first time, when you conduct a search on Google that returns an authoritative result containing fact checks for one or more public claims, you will see that information clearly on the search results page”.
The search result will show the user the claim, who made that claim, and fact check on that particular claim. At the present, information won’t be available for all search queries. Moreover, these fact checks will be provided by third party organization around the globe. As these facts will be provided by various third party organization which may result in different conclusion for the same fact. Even though, it will make the user’s life a lot easier, as differing conclusion are presented. It will be very helpful for people in making their own informed opinion, as they understand the degree of consent on a particular claim. Reviewing and assessing facts will be a lot easier in future, as google is making its fact check more visible in search results.
This effort came to fruition with the help of other organization and communities, till now 115 organizations have joined this initiative. More information about Google Fact Check can be found online. Inceptionsol is exploring its features and will keep you posted.
Publishers who want the public to know that their articles are factual and want to be considered an authority on facts, they must use Schema.org Claim Review markup on the pages where they fact check public statements.
Though this new feature from google will help a lot of people with their fact checking it will also give way to controversies as the fact checking will be done by various of organizations and every one of them will have their own method of confirming or debunking a fact. But it still will be great for the masses of not blindly following false news and fact.
